CAREER PROFILE:  Terry Brown

1999 - present   President of Museum Professionals Inc.
1997 - 1999 Terry Brown and Neal Deaton joined forces to form Museum Professionals Inc.

1992 - 1997 Worked with Neal Deaton at Deaton Museum Services as a fabrication artist, artifact mount maker and installer. Neal has been in the field for 45 years, building exhibits across the country.

1971 - 1991 Fabricated highly detailed natural history exhibits for private collectors.

CLIENTS:

Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, Jackson, Mississippi
Made permanent archival mounts and installed 700 natural science artifacts.
Fabricated and installed large waterfowl diorama depicting a Mississippi swamp with artificial  water, a 10 foot Cypress snag and various native aquatic plants.
Fabricated various trees and plants for dioramas.

 

University of Iowa, Museum of Natural History, Iowa City, Iowa

Fabricated a 12’ sculpture of a wandering albatross as an artifact mount to house an albatross skeleton that was collected almost 100 years ago.  The sculpture showing individual feather detail has been realistically painted.  The unique design of this model allows the skeleton to be viewed from the bottom of the bird.  The 125 fiber optic lights installed in the interior of the bird sculpture enhances the viewing of the skeleton.

Refurbished historic collection of birds.
Fabricated and installed a turkey diorama that consisted of bur oak trees, wild plum, sumac, native flowers and prairie grasses.  It portrayed the edge of the forest and included three turkeys.

Indian Creek Nature Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Fabricated wetlands diorama showing above and below water level.  Exhibit included over 50 highly detailed models of amphibians, fish, turtle, insects and beetles.

Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, Florida

Completed taxidermy mounts on 14 birds ranging from a yellow rumped warbler (the size of your thumb) to anhingas, to a flying pelican.

Center For Western Studies, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Fabricated and installed permanent archival mounts for 75 Native American artifacts.

Lake Superior Center, Duluth, Minnesota

Fabricated and installed cedar and white pine trees on rock outcroppings.
Built 14" models of common green darner, stonefly, blackfly and caddisfly nymph heads.

Cedar Rapids History Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Built and installed permanent archival mounts for 85 artifacts.

Voas Nature Center, Perry, Iowa

Created exhibit depicting the effect of agriculture upon plants and animals.  The exhibit displayed above and below ground exhibits of past wetlands, current agriculture and restored wetlands.

John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, Illinois

Fabricated and installed a 52’ model of a giant pacific octopus suspended on 8 columns.
 

Naper Settlement, Naperville, Illinois

Fabricated and installed bur oak trees with a 12 foot leaf canopy.
Fabricated 1930’s cornfield diorama which included corn plants, models of garter snake, 13 lined ground squirrels, a bobwhite quail and grasshoppers.
 

Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, West Branch, Iowa

Made archival mounts and installed 450 historic artifacts.
Enhanced and repaired existing museum exhibits.
Built life-size model of stream terrain, oak trees and mine tailings.

Made archival mounts for 200 artifacts.

North Carolina Aquarium

Fabricated and mounted cartilage for 9 humpback whale vertebrae which were constructed for visitors to handle.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Lawton, Oklahoma

Fabricated and installed life-size stream terrain (20’ x 8’). The diorama consisted of simulated water with ripples from waterfowl and mammals, eroded bank showing roots, animal tracks in muddy area, cattails, sedges and various sizes of granite boulders.
 

Delta Cultural Center, Helena, Arkansas

Fabricated 3 cypress trees and ground form.
 

Field Museum, Chicago, Illinois

Cast 271 mastodon bones for dwelling exhibit.
 

Pembina Heritage Center, Pembina, North Dakota

Made permanent archival mounts and installed 300 artifacts of cultural heritage.

Made archival mounts and installed 250 artifacts.

Fabricated and installed 4 large oak trees and large grass area.
 

Ducks Unlimited Headquarters, Memphis, Tennessee

Fabricated diorama with cypress trees and knees, large simulated water area with ducks splash landing, mounted 12 ducks, built and installed the ground form terrain.
 

South Dakota Heritage Center, Pierre, South Dakota

Made archival mounts and installed 450 Native American artifacts and 425 cultural heritage artifacts.  
Sculpted life-size dog for Native American exhibit.
Built life-size model of sluice-way mine and hard rock mine.
 

North Dakota Heritage Center, Bismarck, North Dakota

Made permanent archival mounts and installed 250 North Dakota artifacts.
Built 4’scale model of rectangular Mandan Earth Lodge and life-size Nazi bark-covered tipi.
 

Civilian Conservation Corps, Virginia, Minnesota

Made permanent archival mounts for 90 historic artifacts.
 

Missouri Department of Conservation, Jefferson City, Missouri

Fabricated the following: 8’ x 20’ limestone wall, cave with stalactites. Logs, rock and debris for underwater stream terrain in fresh water aquarium.
 

Putnam Museum, Davenport, Iowa

Fabricated and installed Arctic and African ground forms, grasses and collection of animals.

Trained and supervised staff.

 

For many years prior to his affiliation with Neal Deaton, Terry Brown operated his own business of taxidermy and habitat construction. He has attended national and international taxidermy competitions and conventions, winning numerous top awards. Brown was formerly on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Taxidermy Guild.
